CMHR Graduate Course - POPM8001

Research, Treatment, Policy: Current Issues in Mental Health

The Centre for Mental Health Research has developed a new graduate course to be available through the ANU from Semester 1, 2009. Entitled "Research, Treatment, Policy: Current Issues in Mental Health" the 13-week course provides a practical introduction to the nature, epidemiology and treatment of mental health disorders. Lecturers are staff at the CMHR and guest lecturers from other specialties. Topics include neurobiology and mental health, treatments for common disorders such as anxiety and depression, and important emerging themes in the field such as online interventions, ageing and consumer perspectives. It is expected that the course will be of interest to postgraduate students with an interest in mental health, professionals working in sectors such as hospitals and nursing homes, and public servants and administrators who need to keep abreast of the latest empirical findings in mental health research.

The course will be held at the Centre for Mental Health Research, Building 63, The Australian National University. It will run in the evenings over 13 weeks beginning the week of the 23rd of February, 2009 (contact the course convener for start dates for subsequent semesters). Each week involves a four-hour lecture/tutorial session (with short breaks), incorporating both small-group lecture format and interactive tutorial and discussion time. Assessment will involve a structured essay and tutorial work. A reading brick for the course will be available before course commencement from the course convener.

Testimonals from previous students in the course

"The course exceeded my expectations. It gave me a 'helicopter view' of a wide range of topical mental health issues such as prevalence, burden of disease, mental health in the ageing process, co-morbidity and interventions for young people (to name a few). More importantly, I gained an appreciation of key research concepts and developed skills in critically appraising research and drawing my own conclusions. Lectures were more like interactive tutorials, with direct access to engaging speakers actively involved in mental health research. I would recommend this unit highly to anyone wishing to learn more about mental health policy, treatment and research."

"I found this course a rigorous and comprehensive introduction to the epidemiology, nature and treatment of mental disorders. My learning was enhanced by the expertise and enthusiasm of the lecturers who also took part in tutorial discussions. This course is relevant to clinicians as well as researchers and policy makers."
